2022–23 NFL Quarterback Rankings
The 2022–23 NFL Season saw 83 different quarterbacks come in to throw a pass or to take kneel downs at the end of games and saw an NFL record 66 different quarterbacks to start a game! These rankings are based on stats, how well each quarterback did THIS season and does not take into account postseason play. Saints flex player Taysom Hill will not make an appearance on these rankings as he is officially listed as tight end.
83. Nate Sudfeld (Lions)
Lions backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld finds himself in last place on my list due to the fact that he only came into the game to take kneel downs in two different blowout games. Sudfeld started off with the 49ers during the offseason, but did not make their final 53-man roster, however he was quickly picked up by the Detroit Lions to be the backup to Jared Goff. Sudfeld’s stats were five kneel downs that went for negative four yards. Sudfeld is scheduled to be a free agent this offseason and may be looking for a new home.
82. Tim Boyle (Bears)
Tim Boyle made one backup appearance for the Chicago Bears this season in Week 18 to try and provide a spark, however he ended up back on the bench before the game was over. Boyle completed two of his eight passes for 33 yards and was intercepted on two of his passes. Boyle agreed to a contract with the Jets to be a third string quarterback to Zach Wilson and potentially Aaron Rodgers.
81. Chad Henne (Chiefs)
Since this list does not take into account postseason performance Chad Henne does not gain the benefit of his game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Henne saw the field three times in the regular season only to take five knees for minus five yards. Henne also had a fumble this season against the Cardinals in the first game of the season. Henne, following the Super Bowl, will retire and make him the second quarterback to retire this season.
80. C.J. Beathard (Jaguars)
C.J. Beathard only came into the game during blowouts to avoid any injury to Trevor Lawrence. Beathard appeared in four games and had two games of just taking knees, the other two games he threw eleven passes and completed seven of them for 35 yards and threw an interception as well. Beathard agreed to a two year extension this offseason to continue being the backup to Lawrence.
79. Case Keenum (Bills)
Case Keenum only made two appearances this season for the Buffalo Bills and completed two of seven passes for eight yards. Keenum’s numbers were pretty lackluster and it seems his best days are far behind him. The only positive for Keenum this season is that he didn’t turn the ball over, but he also didn’t throw a touchdown pass either. Keenum agreed to a two year deal with the Texans to provide a veteran presence to the quarterback room in Houston.
78. Josh Johnson (49ers)
Josh Johnson started off the season on the Broncos Practice Squad, but following the injury to 49ers’ quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, Johnson’s services were needed in San Francisco. Although Johnson didn’t see any significant regular season action, he had to fill in for Brock Purdy in the NFC Championship game against the Eagles. Unfortunately for Johnson he suffered a concussion following a hit from Ndamukong Suh, which ended his season. In the regular season, Johnson completed one of his two passes for ten yards and had two carries for three yards. Johnson is scheduled to be a free agent and considering he’s entering his age 37 season this might’ve been his last stop in the NFL.
77. Jacob Eason (Panthers)
Jacob Eason ended up playing in a Week 6 game against the Rams filling in for P.J. Walker, who left the game due to a head injury. Eason completed three of five passes for 59 yards, but one of his two incompletions was an interception. Eason was waived by the Panthers and later signed to the 49ers Practice Squad, but also got released from there. Eason signed a Future/Reserve contract with Panthers on January 24 and will likely be on the 90-man offseason roster.
76. Brandon Allen (Bengals)
Brandon Allen appeared in one game this season for the Bengals, when he was thrusted into action to complete the blowout against the Panthers. Allen completed all three of passes for 22 yards and took three kneel downs as well. Allen is scheduled to be a free agent, but will likely be headed back to Cincinnati.
75. Kyle Trask (Buccaneers)
Kyle Trask finally appeared in a game in his career after being made a second round draft choice by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. Trask played against the Falcons in a meaningless Week 18 game after replacing both Tom Brady and Blaine Gabbert. Trask completed three of nine passes for 23 yards. Trask may have a bigger role with Tampa Bay following Tom Brady’s retirement and Blaine Gabbert scheduled to be a free agent. Tampa Bay is clearly headed for a rebuild and may turn to Trask to take over reins of the organization following Brady’s retirement.
74. Brian Hoyer (Patriots)
Brian Hoyer made one appearance this season when he started in place of Mac Jones who was nursing an ankle injury in Week 4. Hoyer completed five of six passes for 37 yards, but suffered a concussion and didn’t play again this season as his backup job was taken by rookie Bailey Zappe. Hoyer agreed to a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders and will help the offense learn the Josh McDaniel way and turn the Raiders into the Patriots 2.0.
73. Chris Streveler (Jets)
Chris Streveler appeared in two games this season for the Jets, one of which he handed the ball off only and the other he came to provide a spark against the Jaguars as Zach Wilson was playing miserably. Streveler completed 10 of 15 passes for 90 yards and ran the ball nine times for 54 yards and fumbled it once. Streveler in his one appearance was more inspiring than Wilson had looked all season, but due to his limited sample size he ranks lower than Wilson.
72. Blaine Gabbert (Buccaneers)
Blaine Gabbert was the second string quarterback behind Tom Brady this season which usually doesn’t equal a lot of playing time. Gabbert appeared in the Week 18 game against the Atlanta Falcons, but was replaced by the younger Trask so Tampa could see what he could do. In Gabbert’s limited role he completed six of eight passes for 29 yards and a touchdown. Gabbert will likely have a job as a backup quarterback next season, whether that be in Tampa or elsewhere.
71. Nick Foles (Colts)
Five years ago, Nick Foles led the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory over the Patriots, but since then his career has been downhill. Foles made two starts this season for the Colts under Jeff Saturday, but looked horrendous. Foles completed 25 of his 42 attempts for 224 yards, but turned the ball over four times and was sacked eight times. Foles is on the books for the Colts for next season, but might not be on the team for much longer because the Colts will sign or draft a quarterback this offseason.
70. Trace McSorely (Cardinals)
Trace McSorely made several back-up appearances behind Colt McCoy, McSorely looked terrible throwing 195 yards and four interceptions. McSorely got a Christmas present from Arizona to start a game against Tom Brady and despite the best efforts of the defense, McSorely couldn’t get anything done offensively for the Cardinals to win the game. McSorely completed 24 of his 45 passes for 217 yards, an interception and lost two fumbles.
69. Anthony Brown (Ravens)
Anthony Brown looked solid during the pre-season for the Ravens, but spent most of the regular season on Practice Squad until Lamar Jackson went out with a PCL Sprain. Brown’s role was to backup Tyler Huntley, but with Huntley having his share of injury issues as well, Brown had to fill in during a Week 14 game against the Steelers. Brown also had to make one start in Week 18 against the Cincinnati Bengals, Brown was less than impressive however, throwing for 286 yards while turning the ball over three times. Despite Brown’s turnovers the Ravens were still in striking range for most of the game, but ultimately fell short 27–16. Brown may be the full time backup next season with Lamar Jackson’s status up in the air.
68. Tyrod Taylor (Giants)
Tyrod Taylor signed with the Giants in the offseason with a chance to end up being the full time starter if he outperformed Daniel Jones, but that didn’t happen. Taylor was Jones’s backup for the season. Taylor appeared in two games this season for the Giants, in Week 4 against the Bears filling in for the Injured Jones and Week 14 in a blowout against Philadelphia. Taylor against the Bears completed one of his three passes for 11 yards and tossed an interception. Things went more smoothly against Philly in Week 14, completing all five of his passes for 47 yards and a touchdown. Taylor is under contract for next season and will likely be the backup to whoever is the Giants next QB.
67. Nathan Peterman (Bears)
Nathan Peterman started the year as the third string quarterback for the Chicago Bears before working his way up the depth chart because of injuries to Trevor Siemian and Justin Fields. Peterman entered two times as a backup, completing three of his six passes for 25 yards and an interception. Peterman was forced to make a start because of an injury to Justin Fields and things started out rough for Peterman, as he was benched for Tim Boyle. Peterman came back in because Boyle struggled and did better the second time around. Peterman completed 11 of his 19 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Peterman agreed to a deal to be the third string quarterback again in Chicago.
66. Chase Daniel (Chargers)
Chase Daniel has been a backup his whole career and continued his role to backup Justin Herbert and Daniel had to make some appearances because of injuries to Herbert. Daniel played in two games replacing an injured Herbert and two games during blowouts, Daniel completed eight of his twelve attempts for 52 yards and touchdown. Next season Daniel will turn 37 years old and with him being a free agent this offseason, we may see Daniel retire.
65. Malik Willis (Titans)
Malik Willis had high hopes from most coming out of the NFL Draft, but Willis showed in the games he played that he needed more time to develop into a great player. Willis made three starts this season filling in for Ryan Tannehill, but Willis ended up getting replaced by Josh Dobbs. Willis’s role was limited to him being a runner and handing the ball off to superstar running back Derrick Henry. Willis completed 31 of his 61 passes for 276 yards and tossed three interceptions. Willis added 123 yards rushing and scored a touchdown with his legs. Willis’s play wasn’t cutting it for the Titans in their conquest for the playoffs, so he got benched in Week 17 in favor of Dobbs. Willis will be the backup quarterback of the Titans next season as he continues his development.
64. John Wolford (Rams)
John Wolford began the season as the backup to Matthew Stafford, but Wolford made a couple starts due Stafford being injured. Wolford himself got banged up with a neck injury and lost his job to Baker Mayfield. Wolford 38 of 62 completions for 390 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Wolford is a free agent this offseason and is likely going to be looking elsewhere for a job.
63. Kyle Allen (Texans)
Kyle Allen was inactive for most of the season, when head coach Lovie Smith needed a spark at the quarterback and turned to Allen for two games before turning back to Davis Mills. Allen looked rough in his two starts and showed how bad the Texans were this season. Allen completed 46 of his 78 passes for 416 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Allen has bounced around everywhere as a backup quarterback since being with the Panthers and will likely be joining another team since the Texans are likely drafting a quarterback and still have Davis Mills.
62. Jeff Driskel (Texans)
Jeff Driskel was the third string quarterback behind Davis Mills and Kyle Allen, but Driskel saw the field a bunch and didn’t look too bad. Driskel played a role similar to Taysom Hill this season, but with a much lesser role. Driskel completed 14 of his 20 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown. Driskel added 75 yards with his legs and caught a pass for four yards. Driskel will be a free agent this offseason and it will be interesting to see the type of market he receives because he’s a gadget player on offense.
61. Trey Lance (49ers)
Trey Lance was supposed to be the 49ers long term starter and take over for Jimmy G this season, but Lance broke his leg in Week 2 against the Seahawks ending his season prematurely. In Week 1 against the Chicago Bears, Lance didn’t show anything spectacular, but the game took place during a monsoon and Lance’s talents can’t be fairly judged based on that game. Lance completed 15 of his 31 attempts for 194 yards and an interception, Lance also added 77 yards rushing. Lance will be battling Brock Purdy for the 49ers starting job next season and Purdy likely has a head up on Lance, since Purdy took San Francisco to the NFC Championship game.
60. Bryce Perkins (Rams)
Bryce Perkins began the year behind Matthew Stafford and John Wolford, but surpassed each of them in the depth chart due to injuries to both, but Perkins got replaced by Baker Mayfield. Perkins is a dual-threat quarterback, which if used correctly can be dangerous, but Perkins proved to be too inexperienced for Sean McVay to stick with him. Perkins completed 19 of 34 passes for 161 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Perkins was below average as a passer and didn’t add much as a runner, only tallying 90 yards. Perkins’ contract was not tendered by the Rams, but they are still open to bringing him back.
59. Brett Rypien (Broncos)
Brett Rypien began the year in a competition with Josh Johnson for the backup to Russell Wilson, which he won. Rypien wasn’t going to get much playing behind Wilson, but Russ was terrible and Rypien got to make two appearances as a backup where he completed eight of sixteen passes for 61 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Rypien made two starts while Wilson was injured and Rypien did not impress, which made head coach Nathaniel Hackett’s playbook look worse. Rypien completed 45 of his 72 passes for 422 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. With Sean Payton the new head man in Denver it will be interesting to see if Rypien will stay around as the backup to Wilson or will be in search of a new job next season.
58. Trevor Siemian (Bears)
Trevor Siemian made one start this season, but got injured during pre-game with an oblique injury which caused him to miss the rest of season after playing in that game. Siemian completed 14 of his 25 passes for 179 yards, a touchdown and an interception. The Bears suffered an embarrassing defeat, but maybe things would’ve been different had Siemian not gotten injured before kickoff.
57. Nick Mullens (Vikings)
Nick Mullens won the backup quarterback job over Kellen Mond, but Kirk Cousins had a good season and Mullens didn’t start a game. Mullens only entered as a backup and had two decent performances, Mullens completed 21 of 25 passes for 224 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Mullens will likely be back in Minnesota as a backup next season.
56. Skylar Thompson (Dolphins)
Skylar Thompson excelled in the pre-season after being selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft in 2022, however Thompson wasn’t going to see the field much during the regular season because he was behind Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater. Tagovailoa suffered three concussions this season which caused him to miss significant time and Bridgewater dealt with multiple injuries which caused him to play only in need of an emergency in some games, so Thompson made several starts, including against the Bills in the playoffs. Thompson completed 60 of 105 passes for 534 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. Thompson likely could see the field even more next season with Tua’s health being in question.
55. Sam Howell (Commanders)
Sam Howell started in his only game played this season against the Cowboys, Howell showed signs that he could be the future in Washington. Howell entered the year behind Taylor Heinicke and Carson Wentz, but Howell will “more than likely” be the starting quarterback going into OTA’s according to head coach Ron Rivera. Although Howell showed flashes in his only start, he still left a lot to be yearned for. Howell completed 11 of his 19 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw an interception. If Washington wants to invest long-term in Howell, they will need to invest into their offensive line.
54. David Blough (Cardinals)
David Blough started the last two games of the season for the Cardinals following injuries to Kyler Murray and Colt McCoy, Blough was signed off the Vikings practice squad Week 14, but didn’t play while backing up McCoy and Trace McSorely. Blough completed 38 of 58 passes for 402 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Blough lost both of his starts, but it was not entirely his fault as Arizona was banged up and had a down year. Blough agreed to a contract with the Cardinals and he is a candidate to receive the starting job while Kyler recovers from his injury.
53. Davis Webb (Giants)
Davis Webb made one appearance this season, but it came as starter in Week 18 against the Eagles. Webb followed head coach Brian Daboll from Buffalo to New York and had been with the Giants before as a backup to Eli Manning, but never saw significant playing time. Webb nearly led a comeback against the Eagles, but the Giants fell short. Webb in the loss completed 23 of his 40 attempts for 168 yards and a touchdown, Webb also added a six yard touchdown run as well. Webb was hired to be the Broncos quarterback coach this offseason to help fix Russell Wilson on Sean Payton’s new staff.
52. Josh Dobbs (Titans)
Josh Dobbs started his season off with the Browns, but didn’t see the field and was cut and signed with the Lions practice squad. After an injury to Ryan Tannehill the Titans poached Dobbs off Detroit and started Dobbs the last two games of the season. Dobbs nearly accomplished a near impossible feat of sending the Titans to the playoffs despite being there for such a short time. Dobbs completed 40 of his 68 passes for 411 yards, two touchdowns and turned the ball over four times. Dobbs agreed to a contract with the Browns to be the backup to Deshaun Watson.
51. Colt McCoy (Cardinals)
Colt McCoy only made three starts this season and made one appearance as a backup because he suffered a concussion and once he came back the Cardinals decided to turn to David Blough. McCoy was average this season completing 90 of 132 passes for 780 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. McCoy is pondering retirement and if he decides to hang up his cleats this offseason, he will be the third quarterback to do so. If McCoy returns for another year he is scheduled to be on the Cardinals roster, but with a new coach they may cut him before next season begins.
50. Jordan Love (Packers)
Jordan Love only made appearances as a backup this season and had one really great performance against the Eagles, in which he threw for his only touchdown of the season. Love completed 14 of his 21 attempts for 195 yards and a touchdown. Love may be starter next season if Green Bay decides to move on from Aaron Rodgers, but if not Love has a 20 million dollar fifth year option next season and Green Bay will likely move on from Love unless they are 100% sure he’s the guy for the future.
49. Sam Ehlinger (Colts)
Sam Ehlinger made three starts this season for the Colts, two of them came under Frank Reich and one other under interim Jeff Saturday. Saturday named Matt Ryan the starter as soon as he took the job and moved Ehlinger back to QB2 and Saturday also gave Nick Foles some starts as well. Ehlinger was mediocre when he entered, completing 64 of his 101 attempts for 573 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Ehlinger will likely be the backup to whoever the Colts decide to draft or sign this offseason.
48. Gardner Minshew (Eagles)
Minshew entered twice this season during garbage time and completed 50% of his passes for 34 yards, but Minshew started two games in place of the injured Jalen Hurts and Minshew looked average in both games. Minshew completed 42 of his 72 passes for 629 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Minshew’s best performance was against the Cowboys, where he nearly led the Eagles to great victory on the road but ultimately fell short. Minshew followed offensive coordinator Shane Steichen to the Colts to be a bridge starter to whoever the Colts draft.
47. Mitchell Trubisky (Steelers)
Mitchell Trubisky was brought in to be the starter until the rookie Kenny Pickett was ready and Trubisky ended up being benched quicker than people thought he would because he was below average at best. Trubisky only appeared in three more games after being benched because of Pickett getting injured and Trubisky looked like his same old self again. Trubisky completed 117 of his 180 attempts for 1,252 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. Trubisky signed a two year 14 million dollar contract last offseason and has a cap hit of 8.25 million that carries into next season, so the Steelers may try to get rid of Trubisky so they’re not paying 8 million for a backup. The former second overall pick may be looking for a fourth team in as many years.
46. Zach Wilson (Jets)
Zach Wilson is arguably the worst starting quarterback in the NFL and he is more famous for what he did off the field this season than he is for what he did on the field. Wilson assumed the starter role once he was healthy and won four straight games, but everything went down quickly and got to a boiling point when after a game where completed 40.9% of his passes and only threw 77 yards and didn’t score a touchdown, Wilson said that he did not let down his defense, who had one of their performances of the season. This arrogance led to Wilson being benched in favor of Mike White, who looked miles better than Wilson. Wilson completed 132 of his 242 attempts for 1688 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions this season and was so bad he will be the backup for whoever the Jets bring in next season.
45. Tyler Huntley (Ravens)
Tyler Huntley replaced the injured Lamar Jackson in Week 13 against the Broncos and was very efficient completing 27 of his 32 attempts for 187 yards, an interception and he added a touchdown with his legs. Huntley started the next four games and won two of them. Huntley completed 48 of his 80 attempts in those four games for 471 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Huntley carried the ball 43 times for 137 yards and a touchdown. Although Huntley didn’t have the greatest season this year he still miraculously made the Pro Bowl for the first time as a replacement. Huntley is scheduled to be a free agent this season, but with some many questions surrounding the Ravens QB room, he will likely be back next season.
44. P.J. Walker (Panthers)
P.J. Walker had his best season yet since returning from the XFL, but unfortunately got injured and lost his job to Sam Darnold. Walker went 2–3 as a starter and if not for D.J. Moore removing his helmet in the endzone, likely would’ve won three games. Walker completed the best pass of the season to Moore on that same play for 62 yards and the game-tying touchdown, but they eventually lost in overtime. Walker completed 63 of his 106 attempts for 731 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Walker signed a two year deal with the Chicago Bears to backup Justin Fields.
43. Teddy Bridgewater (Dolphins)
Before the season many thought Teddy Bridgewater would have an opportunity to be the starter if Tua struggled, however Tua had his best season yet and Bridgewater only got to see the field when Tua suffered from concussions in Week 3 and Week 4. Bridgewater made his only start in Week 5 against the Jets, but Bridgewater suffered a concussion of his own and also dealt with a dislocated thumb and the rookie Skylar Thompson played the backup role for the majority of the season. Bridgewater completed 49 of his 79 attempts for 683 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Bridgewater is scheduled to be a free agent this offseason and will likely be looking for a new job elsewhere with the emergence of the rookie Thompson and Tagovailoa asserting himself as the full-time starter.
42. Jameis Winston (Saints)
Jameis Winston was named the starter for the beginning of the season and looked like he would be able to keep his job, but a fractured back led him to play poorly and Winston was soon benched in favor of Andy Dalton. Winston led the Saints to a 1–0 start, however the Saints lost the next two leaving them to bench Winston. Jameis completed 73 of his 115 attempts for 858 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. Winston agreed to a contract restructure with the Saints to be a backup to Derek Carr.
41. Jarrett Stidham (Raiders)
Jarrett Stidham was brought in to help the other quarterbacks learn the intricate offense of new head coach Josh McDaniels, but with Derek Carr receiving a massive guarantee in his contract and Vegas not wanting to risk injury so Carr, McDaniels decided to start Stidham. Stidham impressed in his two starts with the Raiders, nearly defeating the red hot 49ers. Stidham completed 53 of his 83 attempts for 656 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Stidham also was able to use his legs by adding 84 yards on 14 attempts. Stidham agreed to a two year deal with the Denver Broncos to be the backup and maybe could start some if Russell Wilson falters again.
40. Bailey Zappe (Patriots)
Bailey Zappe impressed many inside the Patriots organization after he came in to replace the injured Mac Jones and Brian Hoyer in Week 4 and nearly out dueling Aaron Rodgers’. Zappe ended up starting two more games and replaced Jones in a Week 7 game against the Bears following Jones’ poor start in his return from injury. Zappe completed 65 of 92 passes for 781 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Zappe will enter the season as the backup to Jones, however it was reported that many people inside the Patriots organization are growing tired of Jones so Zappe may get an opportunity to start.
39. Joe Flacco (Jets)
The 38 year old Joe Flacco made four starts this season and the first three games of the season. Flacco turned back the clock completing 91 of his 155 attempts for 1,051 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Flacco was benched in favor of Zach Wilson and got jumped by Mike White in the depth chart, which upset Flacco. Flacco ended up starting the final game while Wilson and White were out and Flacco completed 18 of his 33 passes for 149 yards. Flacco will likely be on his way out of New York since they are going to bring in new quarterbacks along with already having Wilson on the roster.
38. Cooper Rush (Cowboys)
Cooper Rush was thrusted into action following the finger injury that Dak sustained Week 1 against Tampa Bay and Rush exceeded expectations and some were pushing for Rush to continue starting for Dak even once he was healthy. Rush won four of his five starts, with his only loss coming to the Eagles. Prescott came back the following week and Rush only made two backup appearances and didn’t do much in those two appearances. Rush completed 94 of his 162 attempts for 1,051 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Rush agreed to an extension with the Cowboys to backup Dak Prescott.
37. Mike White (Jets)
The legend of Mike White continued this season after Robert Saleh decided to bench Zach Wilson and let White start several games toward the end of the season. White had some solid performances again this season, but only started once after he broke his ribs against the Bills in Week 14. Once the Jets turned to White there was an instant change in the culture, but that didn’t translate into wins for the Jets. White completed 103 of his 175 attempts for 1,192 yards, four total touchdowns and four interceptions. White agreed to a two year contract with the Dolphins to be the backup to Tua Tagovailoa and with Tua’s injury history could steal a few starts.
36. Carson Wentz (Commanders)
Carson Wentz was traded to the Commanders this offseason after the Colts had enough of him. The Commanders were hoping that Wentz would be their answer at quarterback, which they’ve been searching for awhile. Wentz ended up failing to meet expectations, Wentz lost his job after Taylor Heinicke did better while Wentz was nursing a finger injury. Wentz returned as a QB2 in Washington, but did make one more start after Ron Rivera decided to bench Heinicke and Wentz again failed to play well and Washington decided to cut him following the end of the season to save salary and also to search for a new answer at quarterback. Wentz finished the season with 172 completions on 276 attempts for 1755 yards, twelve total touchdowns and nine interceptions.
35. Baker Mayfield (Panthers and Rams)
Baker Mayfield was traded to the Panthers during the offseason as the Panthers were looking for their franchise quarterback, but Mayfield disappointed heavily and the Panthers ended up releasing him following their Week 12 game against the Broncos. Mayfield ended up getting claimed by the Rams and he made his debut on Thursday Night Football against the Raiders and led the Rams to a comeback victory over the Raiders. Mayfield started the rest of the season for the Rams, but didn’t do anything super impressive. Mayfield completed 201 of his 335 attempts for 2,163 yards, ten touchdowns, eight interceptions and added a touchdown with his legs. Mayfield agreed to a contract with the Buccaneers and will be a starter for the Buccaneers in 2023 and maybe for longer.
34. Matt Ryan (Colts)
After asking for a trade out of Atlanta, Matt Ryan was traded to the Colts and Ryan was expected to lead the Colts to a division title but that didn’t happen. Ryan was a disappointment from the beginning, leading the NFL in turnovers for most of the season. In the final two weeks of the Frank Reich reign in Indy, Ryan was benched for Sam Ehlinger. Ryan reinstated as the starter after Jeff Saturday took over and kept the job for most of the season until the Colts blew a 33 point lead to the Vikings. Ryan completed 309 of his 461 attempts for 3,057 yards, 15 total touchdowns, 13 interceptions and 15 fumbles. Ryan was released to save the Colts some money and also because his play doesn’t warrant that sized contract. Ryan’s playing career may be over because nobody wants to pay Ryan a large contract.
33. Desmond Ridder (Falcons)
Desmond Ridder was the backup quarterback to Marcus Mariota for most of the season, but got an opportunity to start the final four games of the season and impressed. Ridder will be the Falcons starting quarterback next season, but GM Terry Fontenot said the Falcons will be adding to their quarterback room this offseason. Ridder’s best game came against the Buccaneers in Week 18, where he scored his only two touchdowns of the season .Ridder completed 73 of his 115 attempts for 708 yards, two touchdowns and two fumbles lost. Ridder showed he was one of the best quarterbacks in the weak 2022 class.
32. Deshaun Watson (Browns)
Deshaun Watson was suspended the first 11 games of the season for his off the field issues. Watson’s first game of the season was against his former team the Houston Texans and Watson played horribly. Watson started to look like his former self towards the end of the season, but it was too late for Cleveland as they missed the playoffs yet again. Watson was outplayed by his backup Jacoby Brissett, but Cleveland is forced to play Watson since they paid him a large contract this past offseason. Watson completed 99 of his 170 attempts for 1,102 yards, eight total touchdowns and five interceptions. Watson’s contract may get reconstructed this offseason so his cap hit can be less, but he will still be a Brown next season.
31. Davis Mills
This was the season for Davis Mills to prove himself and solidify himself as the franchise quarterback in Houston, but Mills didn’t play great and Houston wasn’t winning games so head coach Lovie Smith decided to bench Mills. Mills was renamed the starter after just two games because Kyle Allen looked way worse than Mills and Mills retook the starting spot and Houston started to become more competitive. Mills completed 292 of his 479 attempts for 3,118 yards, 19 total touchdowns and 18 total turnovers. Mills will likely be a backup next season in Houston behind whoever the Texans bring in this offseason and Mills would be a great backup in Houston.
30. Kenny Pickett
Kenny Pickett had a rough go of things once he replaced Trubisky as the starter in Pittsburgh, however as the season went along Pickett showed his potential and Pittsburgh may have found their franchise quarterback. Pickett replaced Trubisky in Week 4 against the Jets and threw three interceptions, but as the season progressed Pickett did as well. Pickett suffered multiple concussions this season which is a cause for concern because we saw what happened to Tua this season. Pickett completed 245 of his 389 passing attempts for 2,404 yards, ten total touchdowns and ten total turnovers. Pickett will be the starter for Pittsburgh next season and for many more years to come as Pittsburgh seems to be impressed with Pickett. Pickett had an up and down rookie season, but the ceiling is very high for Pickett.
29. Taylor Heinicke
Taylor Heinicke replaced Carson Wentz early on in the season due to Wentz suffering from a finger injury and once Heinicke took over, he never looked back. Heinicke delivered another good season for Washington, keeping them in the mix for the playoffs until the end of the season. Heinicke was replaced as the starter after the Commanders got manhandled by the 49ers in Week 16. Heinicke completed 161 of his 259 attempts for 1,859 yards, 13 total touchdowns and 11 total turnovers. Heinicke agreed to a contract to be the backup to Desmond Ridder in Atlanta and will offer leadership to Ridder.
28. Matthew Stafford
Matthew Stafford and the Rams were looking to repeat as champions again this season, but the Rams got much older this offseason and had plenty of injuries to their offensive line which led to Stafford getting banged up multiple times this season. Stafford suffered from a concussion and later a season-ending neck injury during a Week 11 game against the Saints. Stafford was having a down year before he suffered the injury, completing 206 of his 303 attempts for 2,087 yards, 11 total touchdowns and 11 total turnovers. Stafford was reportedly mulling retirement, but is committed to returning as the starting quarterback of the LA Rams next season, but it would be in the best interest of the Rams to add to their quarterback room this offseason in case Stafford is to get injured severely again next season.
27. Marcus Mariota
Marcus Mariota was always going to be the bridge starter for the Falcons until they felt Desmond Ridder was ready, but the end to the Mariota tenure was odd. Once Ridder took over, Mariota was placed on IR with a chronic knee injury and was away from the team for the rest of the season. Mariota was released following the conclusion of the season and will be looking for a backup opportunity next season. Mariota completed 184 of his 300 attempts for 2,219 yards, 19 total touchdowns and 12 total turnovers. Mariota still had one year remaining on his contract with Atlanta, but wasn’t going to return to Atlanta based off his play this season. Mariota agreed to a deal to backup Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia and if Hurts is injured he has a very similar playing style to Hurts and the playbook can remain the same.
26. Sam Darnold (Panthers)
Sam Darnold had a rough go with the Panthers in his first season which led to the Panthers bringing in Baker. Mayfield won the starting job, but played poorly and lost his job to P.J. Walker because Darnold was dealing with an ankle injury. Walker suffered a high ankle sprain and Darnold finally got his opportunity in Week 13 against the Broncos and Darnold played great for five straight games, but against the Buccaneers, Darnold disappeared. Darnold completed 82 of his 140 attempts for 1,143 yards, nine total touchdowns and five total turnovers. Darnold agreed to a one year contract with 49ers to provide San Francisco with a healthy quarterback in case a disastrous situation occurs like in the NFC Championship game.
25. Mac Jones (Patriots)
Mac Jones was the unquestioned QB1 for the Patriots to begin the season however his play on the field was pretty lackluster and at times Bailey Zappe looked better. Jones went 6–8 this season as a starter and was replaced by Zappe early during a Monday Night game against the Bears. Jones started every game he was healthy, but looked mediocre. Jones completed 288 of his 442 attempts for 2,997 yards, 15 total touchdowns and 12 total turnovers. Jones’ name has been thrown around in trade rumors this offseason as the Patriots are clear they aren’t satisfied with Jones.
24. Russell Wilson (Broncos)
Russell Wilson was traded to Denver after the Broncos failed to acquire Aaron Rodgers and the cost for Wilson was massive. The Broncos traded away Noah Fant, Drew Lock, Shelby Harris and draft picks that turned out to be Charles Cross, Boye Mafe, Tyreke Smith, Dareke Young and future draft picks. Wilson was given a massive contract just before the season began that basically forces the Broncos into keeping Wilson unless they’re willing to take on a massive cap hit. Wilson’s season started out rough with a loss to his former team, the Seahawks. The Broncos offense was so inept this season that they had three different play callers this season and no progress was made until Jerry Rosburg took over the last two games of the season as interim coach. Wilson completed 292 of his 483 attempts for 3,524 yards, 19 total touchdowns and 13 total turnovers on the year. The Broncos hired Sean Payton to be their next coach and Payton may be one of the few coaches to fix Russ. If Russ has another disastrous season in Denver, he will be on his way out the door.
23. Jacoby Brissett (Browns)
Jacoby Brissett was brought in to be the starter and keep things afloat while Deshaun Watson was facing his 11 game suspension for sexual misconduct. Although Brissett went 4–7 as a starter he and the Browns looked much better than they did when Watson was playing. Brissett completed 236 of his 369 attempts for 2,608 yards, twelve touchdowns and ten total turnovers. Brissett was also able to use his mobility to add another element to the Browns offense, he added 243 yards with his legs and two touchdowns. Brissett agreed to a deal in Washington to be the backup to Sam Howell, but could maybe take over if Howell struggles.
22. Ryan Tannehill (Titans)
Ryan Tannehill isn’t able to pass the ball much given the Titans run heavy offense, but Tannehill is able to succeed in the offense because he is able to limit his mistakes. Tannehill had some injury issues this season, missing five games due to injury and if Tannehill didn’t get injured it is likely the Titans would’ve won the AFC South and made the playoffs. Tannehill completed 212 of his 325 passing attempts for 2,536 yards, 15 total touchdowns and eight total turnovers. Tannehill will likely be the starter next season as Malik Willis didn’t show enough this season to warrant gaining the starting job. Tannehill is under contract for next season, however there have been rumors that Tannehill could be on the move but it’s unlikely.
21. Kyler Murray (Cardinals)
Kyler Murray and the Cardinals were expected to improve from their playoff appearance last season, however things went quite opposite. The Cardinals started off slow and got worse as the season went along with a record of 4–13. Murray dealt with injury issues and issues with his head coach Kliff Kingsbury. In a Monday Night game against the Patriots Murray tore his ACL and missed the rest of the season and will likely miss time next season. Kyler completed 259 of his 390 attempts for 2,368 yards, 14 passing touchdowns and nine total turnovers. Murray was once again effective using his legs, rushing for 418 yards and three touchdowns. Although Kyler will likely miss the beginning of next season recovering from an ACL tear, the Cardinals are committed to him long-term as he is the third highest paid quarterback in the NFL behind Rodgers and Wilson.
20. Andy Dalton (Saints)
Andy Dalton started every game once he replaced Jameis Winston in Week 4. The Red Rifle had an improved year compared to his last couple of seasons, but that didn’t translate into wins for the Saints. Dalton completed 252 of his 378 attempts for 2,871 yards, 18 touchdowns and ten total turnovers. Dalton agreed to a contract with the Panthers to be a backup and a veteran leader to whoever Carolina drafts with the first overall pick.
19. Dak Prescott (Cowboys)
Dak Prescott suffered a finger injury in the season opener against the Buccaneers and when he returned he was mediocre, although he was doing enough so the Cowboys could win. Prescott led the Cowboys to the NFC Divisional Round after beating Tom Brady’s Buccaneers in Tampa, but Prescott had a very disappointing outing after one of his best the week prior. The 49ers defeated the Cowboys and ended another promising season for the Cowboys. Stephen and Jerry Jones both believe that Dak will be able to lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl in the future. Prescott completed 261 of his 394 passing attempts for 2,860 yards, 24 total touchdowns and 16 total turnovers.
18. Derek Carr (Raiders)
Derek Carr was supposed to show his greatness this year for the Las Vegas Raiders under Josh McDaniels and the new look Raiders offense. Carr was provided with his receiver from Fresno State, Davante Adams and Adams had another productive season however Carr did not. Carr completed 305 of his 502 passing attempts for 3,522 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Following the Raiders loss to the Steelers on Christmas, Carr was benched so the Raiders could cut Carr with a successful physical and not have to pay him the injury guarantee. Carr was released following the Super Bowl and signed by the New Orleans Saints to reunite him with his former head coach Dennis Allen and maybe Carr can turn things around in New Orleans.
17. Brock Purdy (49ers)
Brock Purdy’s story was one of the best of the 2022–23 NFL season because he was the biggest underdog. Purdy was the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and wasn’t supposed to play because he was going to backup Trey Lance and Jimmy Garropolo, but both sustained injuries and Purdy took over after Week 13 and led the 49ers to the NFC Championship where he tore his UCL on the first drive of the game and couldn’t throw the ball anymore. Purdy had offseason elbow surgery, but should be cleared for the 49ers offseason program in three months. Purdy completed 114 of his 170 passing attempts for 1,374 yards, 14 total touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
16. Jimmy Garoppolo (49ers)
The 49ers quarterback situation was an odd one this season, with the 49ers handing the reins over to Trey Lance and were trying to trade Jimmy G to a quarterback needy team, but they couldn’t find the right partner and eventually decided to keep Garoppolo on a smaller contract as a backup. In Week 2, Lance suffered a broken ankle and Garoppolo was thrusted into action. The 49ers started off slow due to other injuries occurring, but once everyone returned and Christian McCaffery arrived the 49ers were nearly unbeatable. However while escaping the pocket against the Dolphins, Jimmy G broke his foot and was out for the remainder of the season. Garoppolo finished the season completing 207 of his 308 pass attempts for 2,437 yards, 18 total touchdowns and six total turnovers. Garoppolo agreed to a three year deal with the Raiders to reunite him with his former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
15. Justin Fields (Bears)
Justin Fields entered the year facing a lot of scrutiny for his playstyle and how he’s better with his legs than with his arm, which is similar to the criticism Lamar Jackson faces, even though he won an MVP. Fields started off the year slow, but once the Bears offense implemented his legs into the playbook, Fields began to thrive. Fields had the second best rushing season by a quarterback since Lamar in 2019, rushing for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns. Although Field’s passing numbers aren’t as impressive as his running numbers, Fields will likely develop his passing even more with the addition of DJ Moore from the Panthers. Fields completed 192 of his 318 passes for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 total turnovers. The Bears made their commitment to Fields by passing on taking a quarterback first overall and traded back to fill another positional need and acquire Moore.
14. Aaron Rodgers (Packers)
Aaron Rodgers had a decline this season compared to his prior back-to-back MVP seasons, but that is sort’ve expected because Rodgers isn’t getting any younger. Rodgers was given a very inexperienced receiving core and the defense performed below average for the first half of the year, but towards the middle of the season the Packers began to figure it out after a big comeback win against the Cowboys. The Packers went on a roll, but ultimately fell short of reaching the playoffs after the Lions stunned the Packers in Green Bay in a great regular season finale. Rodgers completed 350 of his 542 passing attempts for 3,695 yards, 27 total touchdowns and 16 total turnovers. Rodgers likely played his last season in Green Bay as he has stated that he intends to play for the Jets in 2023, but nothing has been made official yet.
13. Tua Tagovailoa (Dolphins)
Tua Tagovailoa had a very tumultuous season, suffering from three concussions and having to deal with outside criticism about his arm and accuracy. Tagovailoa answered those criticisms and handed in his best season yet and if he stayed healthy he may have been in the MVP conversation. The Dolphins made the playoffs, but lost in the Wildcard Round to the Bills due to lack of experience and multiple mistakes from quarterback Skylar Thompson. Tua completed 259 of his 400 passing attempts for 3,548 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine turnovers. The Dolphins extended the Fifth Year Option to Tua and he will be the starting quarterback in Miami for many years to come if he can remain healthy.
12. Kirk Cousins (Vikings)
Kirk Cousins had one of his best seasons under first time head coach Kevin O’Connell. Cousins started in every game this season and led the Vikings back to the playoffs for the first time since 2019 and a NFC North Division title for the first time since 2017. Cousins will only improve in O’Connell’s offense as well with one of the best receivers in the NFL Justin Jefferson. Cousins completed 424 of his 643 passing attempts for 4,547 yards, 31 total touchdowns and 17 turnovers. The Vikings will be competing with the Lions for the NFC North next season and the road to the playoffs will be a lot harder. Cousins had a great year, however the Vikings were bounced from the playoffs in the first round, where Cousins had a below average performance.
11. Daniel Jones (Giants)
Daniel Jones was under the spotlight this year because this was the end of his rookie contract and he would need to perform well to get paid next season. Jones was expected to have a breakout campaign under new head coach Brian Daboll, who is an offensive guru and was going to bring out the best in Jones. Although Jones had an above average season throwing the ball, he had his best season running the ball. Jones led the Giants to the playoffs for the first time since 2016 and he led the Giants to their first playoff win since 2011. The Giants got crushed in the Divisional Round by their division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles. Jones completed 317 of his 472 pass attempts for 3,205 yards, 15 passing touchdowns and eight total turnovers. Jones also added 708 yards and seven touchdowns with his legs. Jones received a big pay day this offseason and will need to play even better if he wants to backup his contract.
10. Trevor Lawrence (Jaguars)
Trevor Lawrence took some time to clean his system of the Urban Meyer offense and adjust to the Doug Pederson offense, but once he did Lawrence turned it into another gear. Lawrence started off the season slow, but figured things out and really turned it around and led the Jaguars back to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Lawrence led the Jags to an improbable comeback win against the Chargers where the Chargers were up 30–3 and Jacksonville came storming back to win, however the Jaguars were beaten by the eventual Super Bowl champion Chiefs. Lawrence completed 387 of his 584 passing attempts for 4,113 yards, 25 passing touchdowns and 17 total turnovers. Lawrence also added 291 yards and five touchdowns with his legs. Lawrence has taken the next step and will be a force in the AFC with Allen, Burrow and Mahomes for years to come.
9. Lamar Jackson (Ravens)
Lamar Jackson started off the season on fire and made himself an early candidate for the MVP award and then Lamar began to fall off after the first month of the season. The Ravens were one of the best teams in the AFC while Lamar was healthy, but the Ravens gave up their division lead to the Bengals and settled for a Wildcard spot. Lamar suffered a PCL sprain in Week 13 against the Broncos and that caused him to miss the rest of the season and this caused plenty of drama between Lamar and Baltimore. Jackson completed 203 of his 326 passing attempts for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine total turnovers. Lamar was once again explosive with his legs, running for 764 yards and three touchdowns. There is some uncertainty as to where Lamar will end up because he was signed to the Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag and requested a trade from Baltimore. If the Ravens were to move on from Jackson then Tyler Huntley would likely be the starter next season.
8. Tom Brady (Buccaneers)
Tom Brady came out of retirement and many believe he unretired so he could leave Tampa Bay, but he came back and soon after head coach Bruce Arians stepped down and Todd Bowles took over. The Buccaneers were favorites to win the division, but be in competition with the New Orleans Saints. Brady and the Bucs suffered from a tumultuous year filled with plenty of struggles, with the Buccaneers hovering around the .500 mark for most of the season and even dipping below that for some of the season. The Buccaneers wound up winning their division, but were dominated by the Cowboys in the Wildcard Round in what ended up being Brady’s final game as a Buccaneer. Brady announced his retirement again this offseason and this time may be for good and if so this would be a pretty disappointing final season for the G.O.A.T.
7. Justin Herbert (Chargers)
Justin Herbert and the Chargers were expected to take an even bigger leap and give the Chiefs a lot of issues in the AFC West, however neither of those happened. The Chargers barely snuck into the playoffs and Herbert had his struggles this season and didn’t solidify himself as a top five quarterback in the NFL. Herbert suffered a significant rib injury which he played with for a long duration of the season and his injury could’ve been the cause for some of his struggles. Herbert led the Chargers to the playoffs for the first time in his career, but they choked a 27 point lead and lost in the Wildcard to the Jaguars. Herbert completed 477 of his 699 passes for 4,739 yards, 25 touchdowns and 13 total turnovers. The Chargers fired their offensive coordinator and hired Kellen Moore, which may unlock even more Herbert’s attributes and if so the Chargers will make even more strides next season.
6. Geno Smith (Seahawks)
Geno Smith was battling Drew Lock for the starting job in Seattle throughout the offseason, but Geno won the job and was perfect in the opening game against Russell Wilson’s Broncos. Geno didn’t write back and had his best season of his career and earned himself several more years as a starter in Seattle. Geno Smith led the Seahawks to an unexpected playoff birth, but they were decimated by the 49ers in the Wildcard Round. Geno’s efforts also earned him the Comeback Player of the Year Award for having an incredible season after not being a full-time starter for seven seasons. Smith completed 399 of his 572 passing attempts for 4,282 yards, 30 passing touchdowns and 15 total turnovers. Geno also added 362 yards and one touchdown with his legs. The Seahawks may draft a quarterback, but after giving Geno a three year 75 million dollar deal he is poised to be a starter in Seattle again next season.
5. Jared Goff (Lions)
Many thought Jared Goff would be playing his last season in Detroit, however under offensive coordinator Ben Johnson Goff was able to produce his best season of his career. The Lions started out slow, but turned things around and were in playoff contention until the final week of the season. The Lions may draft a quarterback, but Goff has earned himself more time in Detroit and no matter what will be the starter next season and will look to lead the Lions to a division title for the first time since 1991. Goff finished the season completing 382 of his 587 pass attempts for 4,438 yards, 29 touchdowns and 11 total turnovers. Goff had the best touchdown-to-interception ratio of any quarterback this season.
4. Jalen Hurts (Eagles)
Jalen Hurts proved all of his doubters wrong this season by having an MVP campaign and likely would’ve won it had he not injured his shoulder towards the end of the season costing him two games. Not only did Hurts put up MVP numbers he also led the Eagles to a division title and a Super Bowl berth, which they narrowly lost to the Kansas City Chiefs. Hurts completed 306 of his 460 passes for 3,701 yards, 22 passing touchdowns and eight total turnovers. Hurts also added an impressive 760 yards and 13 touchdowns with his legs and was able to dominate the line of scrimmage with his unstoppable quarterback sneak. With Hurts in charge in Philadelphia, the Eagles will be a powerhouse for many years to come if they can stay healthy and keep their core pieces together.
3. Josh Allen (Bills)
Josh Allen turned in another solid campaign in 2022–23, but ultimately the Bills fell short of their ultimate goal of a Super Bowl after getting beat at home by the Bengals in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Allen suffered an elbow injury which seemed to stall the Bills momentum during the season, but they still found a way to win the division and be dominant for the most part. This elbow injury could’ve been a factor for Allen’s interception problem this season which was the demise of the Bills. Allen completed 359 of his 567 passing attempts for 4,283 passing yards, 35 passing touchdowns and 18 turnovers. Allen also added 762 yards and seven touchdowns with his legs. The Bills will need to find a nice balance in their offense to be able to prevent injuries to Allen, but if they don’t Allen will be run into the ground and be constantly injured for the remainder of his career.
2. Joe Burrow (Bengals)
Joe Burrow solidified himself and the Bengals following their Super Bowl run last season and were narrowly defeated by the Chiefs in the AFC Championship. Burrow was seen as the third best quarterback in the NFL coming into this season, but he outplayed Josh Allen and defeated him in the playoffs to prove why he’s the second best quarterback in the NFL. Burrow completed 414 of his 606 passing attempts for 4,475 yards, 35 touchdowns and 15 total turnovers. Burrow also added 259 yards and five touchdowns with his legs. With Burrow in Cincinnati the Bengals will be a force in the NFL for the next several years and will continue to battle the Chiefs for top dogs in AFC.
1. Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs)
Patrick Mahomes was easily the best quarterback this season and no other quarterback was even close. Patrick Mahomes lost his best receiver, Tyreek Hill and was able to put together his second best season of his career. Mahomes was able to single handedly lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory for the second time in his career. Mahomes’ incredible 2022–23 season culminated in a very deserved MVP award and he continues to put himself head and shoulders above the rest of the quarterbacks. Mahomes completed 435 of his 648 pass attempts for 5,250 passing yards, 41 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Mahomes also notched 358 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. Mahomes and the Chiefs will continue to dominate the rest of the NFL for years to come and is the only active quarterback who could possibly pass Tom Brady as the G.O.A.T.
